How to Challenge a Low Total-Loss Offer

A total-loss offer is a starting point, not something you must automatically accept. If the figure does not appear to reflect your vehicle’s actual pre-loss value, review the supporting valuation report before agreeing to the settlement. Check the Vehicle Information Confirm the year, make, model, trim level, mileage, drivetrain, factory options, packages, and specialty equipment. A missing option or incorrect trim designation can reduce the calculated value. Review the Condition Adjustments The report should accurately describe the vehicle’s pre-loss condition. Maintenance records, recent major service, tires, upgrades, and documented condition can be important. Question unexplained deductions and provide photographs, receipts, or service records when available. Examine the Comparable Vehicles Comparable vehicles should be reasonably similar in trim, equipment, mileage, condition, and market area. Vehicles that are not actually available, are located too far away, or require large unexplained adjustments may not provide reliable market evidence. Get an Independent Valuation An independent appraiser can audit the insurer’s report, verify the vehicle’s configuration, analyze market data, and prepare documentation supporting a different actual cash value when justified. This gives you specific evidence to use during negotiations instead of relying only on an opinion that the offer feels low. Insurance companies commonly recover part of their claim payment by selling total-loss vehicles through the salvage market. Because the insurer is controlling both the settlement and disposition of the vehicle, an independent appraisal provides an important second opinion. CCSI does not represent insurance companies and does not buy or sell vehicles. Our work is focused on documenting the vehicle and supporting a fair, evidence-based valuation. Results vary based on the facts of each claim.
